The Policing and Community Safety Authority met the Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly and senior officers at the PCSA offices in Dublin this afternoon.
The meeting opened with tributes and a minute’s silence in honour of former Authority member Ken O’Leary, who died earlier this month.
The first topic of discussion was criminality and harm on Irish roads, and the challenges of keeping communities safe.
The Commissioner and senior officers were questioned about how gardaí were handling incidents of dangerous and wrong-way driving on motorways following the tragic crash on the M9 in August.
The next item on the agenda was first contact, safeguarding, and quality of service at garda stations.
The Authority moved on to questions about policing performance matters, including An Garda Síochána’s Annual Service Plan quarter two report.
PCSA Chair Elaine Byrne concluded the meeting with questions to the Commissioner about the RTÉ Investigates programme on the treatment of garda whistleblowers and how it relates to the Authority’s remit about public confidence in policing.

The next meeting between the Authority and the Commissioner will be in public in Cavan on Thursday 29 October.
